Unemployment in Spain rose in October for the third consecutive month amid a deepening recession and strict austerity measures, according to government data released on Monday.
The number of unemployed increased by 2.73 percent month-on-month to 4.83 million. It is also 10.84 percent higher than a year earlier. Registered unemployment rose primarily in the services sector, as well as in agriculture and industry. It decreased in construction. The National Statistics Institute (INE) reported last month that the unemployment rate reached a new record of 25.02 percent in the third quarter, as austerity measures and the deepening recession overshadowed government efforts to revive the labor market.
