The office of Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić confirmed last night that an incident occurred on the Belgrade-Niš highway on Friday morning.
Details are not provided, but some Belgrade media speculate that it was an assassination attempt and that an official police vehicle allegedly participated in the incident. Nikolić is, according to a statement from his office, confident that ‘all aspects of this event will be investigated’.
– President Nikolić expressed his full confidence in the members of the Ministry of Interior of Serbia, who are responsible for his personal security – the statement from Nikolić’s office reads. The office of the President of Serbia did not provide further details about this incident.
Belgrade’s Blic unofficially reports that it concerns an official police vehicle ‘that unusually approached the convoy of vehicles escorting President Nikolić’.
The tabloid Kurir, on the other hand, published a headline on its website last night reading ‘Assassination on the President’ and the title ‘Ministry of Interior Officer Tried to Kill Toma Nikolić’.
– A high-ranking officer of the Ministry of Interior of Serbia caused the incident on Saturday around three o’clock in the morning when he drove his official car into the convoy of vehicles escorting the President of Serbia and repeatedly cut them off. The incident occurred on the Belgrade-Niš highway, Kurir exclusively learns – the newspaper states on its website, citing unnamed sources ‘from security structures’. The Ministry of Interior of Serbia has not yet commented on this alleged incident. The incident came to media attention at a time when public focus in Serbia was diverted by the ‘Wiretapping’ affair, with the targets being none other than the President of Serbia and the First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić.
