Serbian Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić deemed the wiretapping of President Tomislav Nikolić and First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Aleksandar Vučić unacceptable. He announced an investigation and changes within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The investigation will be initiated by the parliamentary Committee for Oversight of Security Services.
Dačić denied speculation that the wiretapping of the state leadership has anything to do with him as the Minister of Police. It is related to the police, as there is no clear system of oversight and control of actions, Dačić said for TV Prva, emphasizing that according to his information, the Criminal Police Directorate requested call records without knowing it was Aleksandar Vučić’s phone.
Namely, late last night RTS reported that the Security Information Agency (BIA) informed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Aleksandar Vučić that three days ago a part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs issued an order to wiretap his phone, and that President of Serbia Tomislav Nikolić has been wiretapped for a longer period.
Citing a source close to the government, RTS reports that the order was issued at the request of interest groups, with the help of someone from the top of the police. Due to the unrest, Aleksandar Vučić has been provided with increased security, and the Prosecutor’s Office has already initiated an investigation. We have stumbled into a ‘snake’s nest’, among people who use high positions to control lives, among people who dared to wiretap me first, and then Aleksandar Vučić. This will have to be investigated to the end, said Nikolić.
