Many issues between Russia and Ukraine remain unresolved, so a new gas crisis should not be ruled out this winter. With the arrival of autumn, the causes that have led to the interruption of Russian gas supplies to Ukraine twice since 2006 are resurfacing.
Possible reasons for a new gas supply crisis include new Ukrainian demands for Russia to reduce the price of this energy source again, Moscow’s desire to take control of the Ukrainian gas pipeline, and the return of the company Rusukrenergo, which lost its role as an intermediary between Russian Gazprom and Ukraine last year. Sergei Kupriyanov from Gazprom stated to the Financial Times that they were surprised when Ukraine announced last month that it would seek a new reduction in the price of Russian gas.
