Romanian authorities have announced the detention of a man (Liviu Mihail Concioiu), suspected of acquiring over 3 million US dollars through a series of computer crimes, some of which were related to phishing attacks aimed exclusively at employees of the auction company eBay.
He is under investigation for two attacks. It is unknown how many employees were deceived, but according to Gary Warner, a computer forensics expert, it appears that the stolen confidential data of six employees must have been immediately misused to avoid other existing security measures. Concioiu managed to gain access to eBay’s user database, which he used to carry out a third phishing attack targeting specific eBay users. An eBay spokesperson declined to comment further on the case, only issuing a statement that the arrest of Concioiu and his accomplices is a significant victory in the global war against online fraud. He added that eBay’s internal investigation team has been working on the case with Romanian and American police since May 2009. (www.cert.hr)
