The total number of employees in Croatian industry in July was the same as in June, and compared to July of last year, it decreased by 7.2 percent, while labor productivity in the first seven months of this year increased by 6.2 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the first results from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).
Compared to the average monthly number of employees in 2009, the number of employed persons in the industry in July of this year was lower by 7.1 percent. Statistics by activity sectors show that the number of employees in July this year compared to the same month last year was most significantly reduced in the manufacturing industry, by 7.6 percent. In mining and quarrying, there were 7.4 percent fewer employees, and in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning, there were 2.5 percent fewer. Among the activities in the manufacturing industry, the number of employees in July this year compared to July last year fell by more than 20 percent in three sectors – the production of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations by 24.1 percent, the production of metals by 20.9 percent, and the production of textiles by 20.4 percent. A more pronounced decline in the number of employees is also recorded in the production of machinery and equipment (10.4 percent), the production of finished metal products, except machinery and equipment (10.6 percent), and the production of clothing (10.1 percent), etc.
