Muslim businesswoman Samina Akhter, after thoroughly studying the ingredients of numerous cosmetic products from High Street, launched the first line of so-called halal makeup in the United Kingdom, free from alcohol and animal ingredients.
According to Islamic law, alcohol and meat from certain animals are prohibited. This particularly applies to pork, and Akhtar was shocked to discover that some products she used contained fatty acids and gelatin of porcine origin. ‘As a Muslim woman, I wondered what I was putting on my skin. I wanted to find out whether this is permissible in Islam or not,’ said the owner of halal cosmetics Samina Pure. Adhering to Islamic rules, her lipstick and mascara are made from plant ingredients, minerals, essential oils, and vitamins.
