Third Anniversary of the Kornat Tragedy

Šibenik-Knin County marks the third anniversary of the death of twelve firefighters from Šibenik, Vodice, and Tisno in a major fire on the island of Kornat on August 30, 2007.

The only survivor of this tragedy, after long-term treatment and recovery, is Frane Lučić, a firefighter from the Volunteer Fire Department Tisno. He says he does not want to remember the hell he went through on Kornat. Everything he saw and experienced will be told at the trial of Dražen Slavica, writes the portal hrt.hr. This year, in memory of the Kornat heroes, a large Firefighters’ Memorial Parade will be held in Vodice, in which almost all firefighting units from Croatia will participate.

Before the parade, a stone cross was erected on the waterfront in Vodice. It was built in the dry stone technique by the Vodice firefighters and members of the Pag association Suhozid, who also helped build 12 crosses in the memorial park on Kornat. With the cross on the waterfront, the people of Vodice pay tribute to the fallen firefighters, as well as to the long-time secretary of the local DVD, Gordan Alfirev, who committed suicide after the Kornat tragedy. In a few days, the cross will be moved in front of the Fire Station, near the statue of St. Florian, as an eternal connection to Kornat.
