The total number of employees in the Croatian industry in May was 0.3 percent lower than in April and 7.9 percent lower than in May of last year, according to the first results from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS).
Compared to the average monthly number of employees in 2009, the number of employed persons in the industry in May of this year was 7.1 percent lower. By sectors, the number of employees in April of this year compared to the same month in 2009 decreased the most in the manufacturing industry, by 8.2 percent. In mining and quarrying, it decreased by 6.6 percent, and in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning, it decreased by 2.2 percent.
Among the activities in the manufacturing industry, the number of employees in May of this year compared to May of last year fell by more than 20 percent – in the production of basic pharmaceutical products and preparations by 25.6 percent and in the production of metals by 21.9 percent. In the production of finished metal products, excluding machinery and equipment, the number of employees fell on an annual basis by 14.5 percent, in textile production by 14.4 percent, and in the production of machinery and devices by 14.3 percent.
In only two activities within the manufacturing industry, the number of employees in May increased on an annual basis, namely in the production of computers and electronic and optical products by 5.8 percent and in other manufacturing industries by 1.2 percent. Labor productivity in the industry in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year increased by a total of seven percent. Meanwhile, in mining and quarrying, it decreased by five percent, in the manufacturing industry, it increased by 7.2 percent, and in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning, it increased by 4.7 percent.
