At the ceremonial session of the Government, Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor stated that Croatia is at a new crossroads almost as difficult as in 1991.
She said that Croatia can implement economic reforms and prosper or collapse. Those who claim that nothing should change and promise a better life are not telling the truth, she emphasized and reiterated that the future of Croatia depends on the success of the reforms. On this day, in addition to independence, we celebrate the unity of the Croatian people, she said, adding that we must never forget the great contribution of Croatian defenders and the first president Franjo Tuđman in the fight for an independent Croatia.
Speaker of the Parliament Luka Bebić said that on this day we should reflect and look at what we have achieved in the last 19 years. He stated that poor privatization has destroyed the social system centered around work and that this must change. To exit the crisis, measures alone will not be sufficient, but also the fight against corruption, the president believes. He warned that despite the crisis, social justice must always be kept in mind. He expressed support for the Government in implementing reforms, cooperating with the Hague Tribunal, and negotiating EU accession. He stated that Croatia must strengthen cooperation with countries outside Europe. Croatia and its leaders must do everything to see optimism and will in the eyes of their people, said Josipović.
