The Croatian Journalists’ Association (HND) has called on the Government to find a solution for the newspaper Vjesnik, to preserve journalistic jobs, and to ensure the continued publication of this daily newspaper.
The survival of the newspaper is threatened after the decision of the Management, Supervisory Board, and Assembly of Narodne novine, which decided that Narodne novine will no longer publish this newspaper from July. If a solution is not found, the fate of 108 journalists and workers of Vjesnik, as well as around a hundred freelance contributors, will be uncertain. In a situation where some media outlets have already shut down and where costs are being cut across media houses, the closure of Vjesnik would cause an additional significant social impact on the journalism market, states HND in a press release. HND warns the Government that the journalists of Vjesnik are not responsible for the poor business decisions that have led them to this situation and calls on the Government to find legal and financial grounds that would give it a chance. In the next two years, with a new professional editorial team and necessary restructuring, Vjesnik should be given a chance to become a newspaper that can largely self-finance, concludes the press release by HND President Zdenko Duka.
