GDi Opens Development Center in Pécs

GDi group (GDi Gisdata/GDi Systems), one of the leading specialized technology companies in the region and the largest company for geoinformatics in Central and Southeast Europe, has launched a specialized center for the development of mobile technologies.

The center is located in Hungary, in the city of Pécs, and was initiated by GDi’s Hungarian office in collaboration with a local university and partners. This is the second GDi development center in a neighboring country, as the group has been utilizing the services of a similar specialized team in Budapest since 2005. The quality of local universities and the developed business environment, where a larger number of software IT companies operate with which GDi collaborates regularly, were the primary factors in the selection of locations for the centers.

The Pécs center is managed by Dr. Ferenc Brachmann, a professor of computer science at the University of Pécs. The new center will focus on the development of practical products that will integrate geoinformatics location technologies and accompanying services, as well as applications for the new generation of advanced (so-called smart) mobile phones – such as the popular iPhone and devices powered by Symbian, Android, Windows Mobile, and WebOS operating systems. Projects funded by the EU will also be undertaken, related to the development of cloud computing solutions and projects for the small and medium-sized enterprise sector, as well as software as a service offerings.

The CEO of GDi Gisdata, Boran Lončarić, emphasized the importance of continuous investment in research and development when it comes to technology industries and companies engaged in the development of intellectual capital. -The technology industry is successful and dynamic primarily because it is based on the interaction of knowledge and ideas. To arrive at a good and marketable idea, and ultimately to a tangible new product or service, it is essential to invest resources in development. Therefore, we decided to leverage our expertise in geoinformatics and telecommunications technologies and see what ideas we can come up with by combining these two areas- explains Lončarić.

Attila Olah, head of GDi’s development center in Budapest, added that with the opening of the new center in Pécs, focusing on mobile technologies and collaborating with the existing development team, the prerequisites for creating even higher quality innovative solutions in the increasingly dynamic telecommunications segment will be ensured.
Although it was relatively recently opened, GDi’s new development center has already produced initial results – a prototype version of an application for using location services in combination with the popular online social service Facebook has been developed. The system works in such a way that users of the application can, at their discretion, allow the publication of their current location and see the position of their acquaintances in the vicinity. Based on this information, users can easily contact their friends and meet them at a predetermined location. This is the first application designed by the new GDi development center for mobile technologies, and numerous other projects are planned that will connect location, internet, and mobile technologies in interesting, innovative, and useful ways to provide added value services for end users.
