German parliamentary representatives approved on Friday Germany’s share in a massive aid package aimed at protecting over-indebted eurozone countries from a debt repayment moratorium.
The lower house of parliament voted in favor of the proposed legislation with 319 votes for, 73 against, and 195 abstentions. The upper house of parliament, which represents 16 federal German states, will vote on the proposal during the day. The package of 750 billion euros (almost 1 trillion dollars) was assembled two weeks ago. Germany’s share, the largest European economy, will amount to between 123 and 147.6 billion euros in credit guarantees. This was preceded by a special package to rescue Greece. (H)
