The Nemetova Polyclinic from Zagreb opened the Weight Regulation Center on Tuesday, and a professional multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, psychologists, nutritionists, and kinesiologists explained to the attendees the dangers associated with excessive body weight.
At the clinic, each patient will be approached individually, meaning that the treatment for obesity will be conducted interdisciplinary, which means that a specialist in internal medicine will work with the patient to determine whether obesity is a symptom of an underlying disease, a psychologist will attempt to identify the cause of weight gain, and a nutritionist and kinesiologist will establish a diet and fat-burning regimen. Endocrinologist Mirko Korščić emphasized that obesity in Croatia is taking on an epidemic character, as more and more citizens of Croatia are facing the problem of excessive body weight.
-This is not about cosmetics, nor is it about quickly losing weight before summer, but rather about how serious problems can be ‘hidden’ behind obesity. The problem of excessive body weight should be approached interdisciplinarily, meaning that before treatment begins, examinations by multiple specialists are necessary to first determine the cause of obesity for each individual – said Korščić. According to research by the World Health Organization, approximately 67 percent of men and about 58 percent of women in Croatia have issues with excessive weight, placing us at a high 13th position in the world.
