Telecom Italia SpA plans to eliminate an additional 6,800 jobs by the end of 2012 as part of its efforts to reduce costs and increase operational efficiency.
The management of the largest Italian telecommunications company met with unions on Monday to discuss 4,500 jobs that are to be eliminated under the new business plan for the period from 2010 to 2012, in addition to the previously announced 2,300 layoffs, according to the company’s statement. Telecom Italia has already sold off secondary parts of its business and focused on its core Italian and Brazilian markets. At the end of 2009, it employed more than 71,000 workers. In the past year, its profit fell by 27 percent due to lower revenues. (H)
