Facebook Surpasses Google in the U.S.

The popular social network surpassed the powerful Google last week to become the most visited website in the United States.

Heather Dougherty, director of Hitwise, which measures website traffic, announced on her blog that Facebook had 7.07% of total internet traffic in the second week of March, while Google had 7.03%. Facebook had sporadically exceeded Google’s traffic, as it did on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and the weekend of March 6 and 7, but now it has for the first time surpassed the internet giant on an overall weekly basis. This result also represents an overall record for Facebook in the U.S. market, where its traffic in March increased by nearly 2%, which is an impressive 185% increase compared to the same period last year. Dougherty writes that Google had only a 9% increase in traffic during the same period. Hitwise only measures internet traffic, and now we just have to wait to see if other parameters will also show Facebook’s excellent performance. Compete.com, for example, still has Google in the lead with 147 million unique visitors in January, while Facebook is close behind with 133 million unique visitors. (www.dnevnik.hr)
