A survey conducted by the agency Hendal and the portal Ja Trgovac in January showed that after a restrained holiday shopping season, consumers decided to also avoid seasonal sales.
Only one quarter of citizens stated that they shopped during sales, primarily Slavonians and young people aged 15 to 35. Additionally, those with higher household incomes and larger households (four or more members) shopped more. The majority of purchases were for clothing, cited by 83 percent of citizens. This was followed by footwear at 29 percent, and gifts, electronics, and food at less than 5 percent. Citizens expressed greater dissatisfaction with discounts (35 percent), while a smaller percentage were satisfied (30 percent), with a very high proportion of citizens stating that due to a lack of experience and information, they cannot assess the offers and discounts during sales.
Among citizens, there is a more favorable opinion of seasonal discounts abroad than those in Croatia. Thus, as many as 64 percent of citizens believe that seasonal discounts abroad are more favorable, with this view being predominant among young people (15-35). However, despite the positive attitude towards seasonal discounts abroad, the majority of respondents did not decide to travel for shopping. The survey was conducted in January 2010 on a nationally representative sample of 402 citizens. (H)
