Wal-Mart to Lay Off 11,500 Workers

The American retail giant Wal-Mart announced over the weekend that it will eliminate approximately 11,500 jobs in the U.S. Wal-Mart’s Chairman and CEO Brian Cornell stated that about 10,000 demonstrators in the Sam’s Club demonstration programs will be affected by the layoffs, most of whom are part-time employees.

This move stems from Wal-Mart’s decision to outsource the demonstration program to the marketing firm Shopper Events."As far as we know, Shopper Events will significantly increase the number of employees for this new job and expects to hire approximately the same number of workers", Cornell said."All current demonstrators at Sam’s Club will have the opportunity to compete for those jobs with Shopper", he added. At the end of last week, Wal-Mart announced that it would close 10 stores this year and as a result, lay off about 1,500 associates. (H)
