France Introduces Tax for Internet Search Engines

France plans to introduce a so-called ‘Google tax’ on internet search engine sites in order to raise funds to support its creative industry, which has struggled during the digital revolution, writes jutarnji.hr

The proposal, whose provisions were determined by a government commission, has once again unearthed the ‘war axe’ that the French have against Google, the internet giant that the world ‘loves to hate’. The tax on advertising revenue is France’s latest attempt to control the internet, which has witnessed some of the world’s strictest anti-piracy laws. In addition to Google, the new tax would also target other major internet operators in Europe such as Microsoft and Yahoo!, regardless of whether they have offices in France. Under the new law, operators would pay tax every time an internet user in France clicks on an advertising banner or sponsored link on their sites. (jutarnji.hr)
