Dubrovnik without electricity, heating, water, and telephone

Dubrovnik, Mokošica, Župa dubrovačka, and Konavle remain without electricity following last night’s fire at the transformer station in Komolac. The fire affected one facility, which was completely destroyed. The fire was extinguished by 15 firefighters with five vehicles.

The damage is estimated in millions of kuna, and Dubrovnik and its surroundings are also facing a water shortage. For now, the water supply to consumers in higher zones has been interrupted. Additionally, due to the prolonged power outage, there have been interruptions in fixed telephone traffic outside the immediate area of the city of Dubrovnik, and in mobile telephony within the city itself. Although it was announced that the fault would be resolved by morning, the State Civil Protection and Rescue Service in Dubrovnik reported that there would be no electricity until the afternoon.

It is expected that an old facility, which was closed in 2007, will be put into operation. When asked why a facility that is only two years old burned down, there is currently no answer. A few days ago, the transformer station near the Dubrovnik General Hospital also burned down. After 2005, this is the first complete outage from the electrical system in the Dubrovnik area, which still does not have an alternative power supply route resolved. At that time, the residents of Dubrovnik were without electricity, heating, and hot water for several days. The Deputy Mayor of the City of Dubrovnik, Tatjana Šimac Bonačić, recommended that parents do not send their children to school today, and an official decision will be made soon. (www.hrt.hr)
