Media lawyer stars have shone in the spectacular arrests of managers from Podravka and the Croatian Privatization Fund in the actions of big and small ‘Maestro’.
Despite the (self)promotion of lawyers in the listed and other proceedings conducted due to suspicion of economic crime, there are not (many) criminal lawyers in Croatia who know how to read balance sheets, financial reports, or are specialized in representing suspected or accused entrepreneurs for criminal acts in commercial and financial law. Mostly, these are all criminal lawyers who are ‘generalists’, good connoisseurs of procedural law, especially important in the early days of the investigation in the criminal proceedings conducted due to economic crime. These criminal lawyers know exactly which doors to knock on when a permit is needed, and later, as the process develops, they will hire consultants, often colleagues who are lawyers specializing in corporate law.
