The President of the Republic of Croatia, Stjepan Mesić, stated today that he respects the decision of the Constitutional Court, which determined that the law on the so-called crisis tax is in accordance with the Constitution.
I must say that this is just proof that this state functions as a rule of law, and I respect the decision of the Constitutional Court", said President Mesić, who participated in the conference "Intermodal Transport and Creating New Values in Croatia" organized by the Intermodal Promotion Center (IPC). When asked if he feels defeated by the Constitutional Court’s decision, Mesić replied that he does not feel defeated.
"No, why would I feel that way? I considered that this method of introducing the tax is not the best and most purposeful, and that those who generate far greater incomes should participate more in the crisis tax, as the system has enabled them to achieve higher incomes. However, the Constitutional Court has decided this way, and I always respect institutions, especially the institution of the Constitutional Court", Mesić said. The Constitutional Court today rejected the request of the President of the Republic by a majority vote, as well as the proposals of more than 35,000 citizens and associations who challenged the so-called crisis tax, asserting that the Law on Special Tax on Salaries, Pensions, and Other Income is in accordance with the Constitution.
