Unions for Savings Propose Postponement of Elections

In a year of savings, crisis, and recession, elections should be avoided, is the proposal from the unions that continue to fight to ensure that the salaries of public administration workers are not reduced. Hundreds of millions of kuna are spent on elections, they assert, claiming that due to campaigns and pre-election promises, there is no real savings and sincere fight against the crisis.

In Croatia, there are elections every so often, local, parliamentary, presidential, and all of this costs, says Krešimir Sever: ‘It costs the state more than a hundred thousand kuna, around 150 for parliamentary elections, and it is not exactly known how much local elections will cost, but they certainly have their price.

‘Aware that we cannot avoid the upcoming elections, Sever suggests considering parliamentary and local elections in the same year. ‘All of this costs us different promotions, not just promises but all sorts of pre-election rallies. Savings on elections are out of the question, both the Government and the opposition agree,’ says Sever. ‘Changing the electoral rhythm for local, state, and presidential elections, which are determined by the constitution and law, and extending mandates is out of the question,’ said Luka Bebić, President of the Parliament.
