Today is the last day for income tax filing

Croatian citizens have submitted more than 907 thousand income tax returns for the previous year by today, and they can submit their returns only today – until 7 PM at the Tax Administration offices, and until midnight by mail. According to the Ministry of Finance, tax officials have received 907,705 annual returns to date, and it is expected that a total of 1.1 million income tax returns for 2008 will be submitted.

This year, the last day for filing is today, March 2, until midnight, as the usual deadline for filing is the last day of February, and February 28 was a Saturday. Citizens can submit their tax returns at the relevant Tax Administration office according to their place of residence or habitual residence, and the deadline for this method of submission is until 7 PM, when the Tax Administration offices will be open today.
Citizens can also send their annual income tax returns by mail, specifically by registered mail, and the deadline for this method of submission is today until midnight (at post offices that operate until 12 AM). The Ministry of Finance expects a record number of annual income tax returns this year, as well as a record amount of refunds of overpaid taxes of around 1.8 billion kuna.

Last year, about 1.04 million tax returns were submitted, and citizens were refunded more than 1.69 billion kuna of overpaid taxes. We expect that the refunds of taxes and surtaxes based on annual returns for 2008 will proceed at the same pace as the previous year, say officials at the Ministry of Finance. Last year, tax officials began the first payments of income tax refunds in April. Citizens can find all instructions for completing the income tax return for 2008 and useful information for filling out the returns on the websites of the Tax Administration (www.porezna-uprava.hr) and the Ministry of Finance (www.mfin.hr), and information related to taxes can also be obtained at the Tax Administration contact center at the toll-free phone numbers – 0800 66 99 33 (tax exemptions, reliefs, and tax-deductible expenses for citizens), and 0800 1001 (reporting tax evasion, non-issuance of receipts, illegal work, other tax violations, and complaints about the work of Tax Administration officials).  (H)
