Lexicographic Institute and Hina Plan to Create a National Database

The Lexicographic Institute Miroslav Krleža and Hina signed today in Zagreb an agreement on long-term business cooperation aimed at creating a national database of public media.

The agreement was signed by the director of the Lexicographic Institute Bruno Kragić and the director of Hina Smiljanka Škugor-Hrnčević. The two public institutions, which have special importance for the Republic of Croatia in their fields of activity, are compatible when it comes to documentation processing and database creation. Therefore, they believe that mutual cooperation will significantly improve access to information from public media, which is important in encyclopedic, lexicographic, and scientific work, in the work of the modern national news agency, as well as from the perspective of preserving archival material of national interest and creating a digitized national media database.

Kragić and Škugor-Hrnčević expect that the two institutions will expand cooperation in mutual interest. It was emphasized that Hina has initiated the development of a comprehensive program for the computer processing of content from public media and that it applies a methodology that meets modern professional standards. The Lexicographic Institute and Hina will closely cooperate in the development and verification of the semantic text processing system that the agency is developing in collaboration with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb. "Hina and the Lexicographic Institute, through this agreement, demonstrate how the practical and developmental interests of Croatian knowledge society are recognized and connected at a high European level," said Prof. Dr. Damir Boras, president of Hina’s Expert Council.
