15,000 Slovenes Laid Off in the Last Four Months

In the last four months, 15,000 workers in Slovenia have lost their jobs, reported Slovenian Radio on Tuesday, citing the latest official data from the national employment office.

According to official data, 133 requests have been submitted to state bodies from Slovenian companies, which had to reduce the length of the workweek to 36 hours due to decreased orders, to subsidize the reduction of working hours, relating to support for 33,000 employees.

With recent measures, the Slovenian government has offered such support to companies that will reduce the number of working hours to avoid laying off excess employees, and these should start being paid out in two months. However, employers claim that this is merely one type of state aid to alleviate liquidity difficulties, and not a comprehensive measure that will save jobs, as the offered subsidies are too small. (H)
