Domestic Investors in a Bad Mood

On the Zagreb Stock Exchange today, most analysts expect stagnation, fearing a possible spillover of negative sentiment from global markets to the domestic market.

Of the eight analysts who participated in Hina’s survey, six expect stagnation of the Crobex today, while one expects growth and one expects a decline. The Crobex index weakened by 1.4 percent yesterday, to 1,763 points. Regular trading in shares reached nearly 37 million kuna. "There is a possibility of negative sentiment spilling over from global markets, fueled by weak macroeconomic news from the global economy and disappointing corporate earnings reports, so I expect stagnation on the domestic market today, with a possibility of negative correction," says Maja Bešević, an analyst at the brokerage firm Abacus Brokers. Share prices on Wall Street fell on Thursday after Microsoft reported worse-than-expected business results and announced layoffs, and new data indicating a strengthening recession also worried investors.

As a result, leading indices on Asian stock exchanges also fell this morning, with the Japanese Nikkei dropping more than 3 percent. Along with the usual most liquid shares in the construction and telecommunications sectors, Bešević points out that there may also be a continuation of increased investor interest in shares of shipping companies. The reason for this is the announcement from Atlantska Plovidba that it will discuss, among other things, the possibility of paying an advance dividend for 2008 at the Management Board meeting on January 27, as well as yesterday’s jump in the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) for bulk cargo by 45 points, to 945 points. Speaking about the situation in the global shipping sector, Bešević emphasizes that one of the leading shippers in the world, Greek DryShips, announced that it would close the last quarter of last year with a loss, announced a fleet reduction, and suspended dividend payments in an effort to dramatically reduce capital costs and minimize cash usage.

Commenting on the BDI index’s jump in the last three days by 77 points, she assesses that it is a short-term trend. "China is filling its iron ore stocks, which currently stand at about 58 million tons, in an effort to strengthen its position in upcoming negotiations with leading global raw material suppliers regarding prices and other conditions related to annual deliveries. This affects the recovery of the BDI index, which is of a short-term nature," assesses Bešević. However, as she points out, investors are closely monitoring the movement of the BDI index as it will be one of the first indicators whose growth will signal the beginning of a recovery in the global economy.

Today, the shares of Agrokor’s companies could also be in focus for investors after Business.hr reported that Agrokor is trying to find a buyer for its retail chain Konzum. Among today’s events, the fifth session of the Economic Council stands out, where an overview of measures and policies in the European Union for addressing the economic crisis will be presented, along with an initial discussion on the situation in Croatia. The agenda also includes information on the conducted public discussion on the Energy Development Strategy of the Republic of Croatia.

Furthermore, today representatives of Đuro Đaković Holding will hold a press conference after the Supervisory Board meeting on the topic of making a decision based on the tender for expressing interest by collecting offers for the purchase of shares of Đuro Đaković Montaže. By December 16, 2008, only one offer from Bilfinger Berger Power Services GmbH was received for the purchase of Đuro Đaković Montaže, out of a total of five companies that previously expressed interest in purchasing shares of Montaže. The starting price for a package of 126,594 shares of Montaže, which constitute 50 percent plus one share in the company’s capital, is 63.29 million kuna. (H)
