The European Commission recommends European energy companies to file lawsuits against Russian and Ukrainian energy companies if gas supply is not quickly restored, stated the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso.
"If the agreement reached with EU mediation is not urgently respected, the Commission will recommend European companies to file a lawsuit against Russian and Ukrainian companies and will call on member states to take joint action to find alternative ways of energy supply and transit," Barroso said to Members of the European Parliament gathered at a plenary session in Strasbourg. Barroso emphasized that Russia and Ukraine have proven to be "unreliable partners" and that European citizens cannot be held hostage to their bilateral dispute. (H)
