Slovenia Without Russian Gas from Midnight

Russian Gazprom has completely halted the supply of natural gas to the Slovenian company Geoplin from midnight, which typically meets 95 percent of the needs in the total consumption of this energy source, which in Slovenia amounts to an annual level of 1.2 billion cubic meters, representing 14 percent of the total needs in the energy balance of the country.

"Today at midnight, the Russians completely stopped the supply and announced that this situation will remain for the next 24 hours," said Alojz Stana, the director of Geoplin, on Wednesday, adding that it is difficult to assess how the situation will develop further. Stana explained that Geoplin, despite this, is currently ensuring a sufficient quantity of this energy source by intensifying the use of its gas storage in neighboring Austria, where it has reserves of 110 million cubic meters, which would be enough for one month’s consumption.

"We are currently ensuring normal supply to our customers," stated Stana. Slovenia consumes 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas annually, of which 70 percent is used in industry, and gas from Russia accounts for about 55 percent of total imports. About 10 percent of imports come from Austrian gas, while the rest is gas from Algeria supplied to Slovenia via pipeline by the Italian company ENI.

Due to the energy situation with gas, Slovenia is interested and is negotiating with Gazprom about its involvement in the new South Stream pipeline, and recently, discussions have been revived regarding the possibility of joining one of the projects for the construction of a liquefied gas terminal in the immediate vicinity. Most Slovenian energy experts assess that the Ukrainian-Russian disputes regarding the transportation of gas to Europe, which have led to the current situation, will be resolved by the end of this week or the beginning of next week, as otherwise, there could be reductions in the supply of natural gas to customers, primarily for those consumers who have the option of using alternative fuel.
