The Maritime Innovation Center iNavis Established in Šibenik

During the next year, the formal establishment of the Maritime Innovation Center iNavis based in Šibenik and the launch of the first start-up companies is planned, as announced by the Agency for Promotion of Export and Investment (APIU) following today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the implementation of the iNavis project, signed by representatives of the Government of the Kingdom of Norway, APIU, and the City of Šibenik.

The memorandum was signed, as stated, by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Croatia, Terje Hauge, the Deputy Director of APIU, Božica Lapić, and the Mayor of the City of Šibenik, Nedjeljka Klarić. The total value of the project is approximately 40 million kuna, of which 20 million kuna will be provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway, and 20 million kuna will be secured from EU pre-accession funds, through the ministries of economy and science and the City of Šibenik.

Support for the project and readiness to participate in the future work of the center have already been expressed by numerous Croatian and Norwegian institutions, as well as companies, and APIU emphasizes that companies from the fields of shipbuilding, transport, energy, propulsion machinery, ICT technologies in maritime, innovation, marine and underwater research, and other sea-related activities will be gathered in one place. The center will provide these entities with advisory, institutional, and financial support and actively participate in the initiation and realization of joint projects.

The preparation of the project began in 2006 with the development of a study, and during 2009, the formal establishment of the iNavis center and the launch of the first start-up companies is planned, along with the preparation of documentation for the realization of the business facility where companies collaborating on projects will be located. In the first years of the center’s operation, the opening of 80 to 100 new jobs for highly educated young people and the launch of about 10 new promising companies is expected, as stated in the agency’s announcement.
