Emirates Purchase Missiles Worth $3.3 Billion from the U.S.

The United Arab Emirates, a Gulf neighbor of Iran, has signed a $3.3 billion agreement to purchase missiles from the American company Raytheon, reported The National, based in Abu Dhabi, on Saturday.

The newspaper states that this concerns the Patriot missile system. The agreement includes technology, training, and supply of a medium-range missile system that is part of the defense shield that the UAE air forces are establishing to protect the country from regional threats, according to The National.

Gulf Arab states have previously expressed concern over Iran’s nuclear program and called for a peaceful resolution of disputes between Tehran and Washington regarding Iran’s nuclear plans.

The U.S. accuses Iran of planning to develop nuclear weapons, while Tehran responds that it is working on a program for civilian energy production. Tensions are a source of concern in the region due to fears of a potential military conflict between Tehran and Washington. (Hina)
