Gredelj secures a contract in Montenegro worth 3.5 million euros

The Gredelj railway wagon factory and the Railway Transport of Montenegro have signed a contract for the investment repair and modernization of 10 passenger wagons worth 3.5 million euros, it was announced today from Gredelj.

The contract includes extensive work on ten passenger wagons that are over 20 years old, encompassing comprehensive modernization and investment repair, which includes air conditioning and generally significantly raising passenger comfort, the announcement states. This is particularly important considering that the wagons will operate on the Bar-Belgrade route during the tourist season, and the management of the Railway Transport of Montenegro intends to elevate the comfort in the passenger area to a higher level.

The contracted work on the first five wagons is expected to be completed by the end of May 2009 so that they can be included in the timetable during the tourist season, while the completion of work on the remaining five is planned for the end of August 2009. The repair and modernization work was awarded to Gredelj through an international tender in which it was selected as the most favorable bidder. Gredelj expresses satisfaction with the awarded job, which represents a continuation of cooperation with the Railways of Montenegro, for which Gredelj realized projects in the field of passenger wagon repairs in 2000, albeit on a smaller scale.

Like other railways in the region, the Railways of Montenegro have undergone a restructuring process. The company has been divided into two parts – transport and infrastructure. After restructuring, Railway Transport has adopted an action plan in which the renewal of passenger wagons is a priority, but other significant projects in the area of reconstruction and modernization of locomotives and motor trains are also expected, where Gredelj also sees its opportunity, the announcement states.
