Ban Ki-moon Proposes That the Summit on the Global Crisis Be Held at the UN

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday in Quebec supported the idea of French President Nicolas Sarkozy to hold an international summit dedicated to the global financial crisis and offered to host such a meeting at the UN headquarters.

"Sarkozy and I agree that there is no time to waste and I fully support the idea of convening such a meeting, no later than early December. I am pleased to offer… the UN for such a summit," the UN Secretary-General stated after meeting with Sarkozy in Quebec, where they participated in the Francophonie Days.

The proposal comes at a time when Sarkozy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso are expected to persuade U.S. President George W. Bush, with whom they will meet later on Saturday local time at Camp David, of the need to organize this summit. (H)
