The mortgage bank Fannie Mae has announced that it is forgiving the mortgage debt of a 90-year-old woman who shot herself in the chest when sheriff’s deputies came to evict her.
Republican Congressman Dennis Kucinich spoke about the case of Addie Polk on Friday during the vote on a $700 billion bailout plan for failing banks. Kucinich was against the plan.
On the same day, Fannie Mae announced that Addie would not lose her home, that it would forgive her mortgage debt, and allow her to return to her house in Akron, Ohio, where she has lived since the 1970s. She became the sole owner of the house after her husband’s death in 1995 and took out several mortgage loans in 1997, which she later restructured, further increasing her debt. Polk is currently in a hospital in Akron and is expected to recover from the injuries sustained last week. (Hina)
