Freight vehicles on Slovenian highways can pay tolls with the ‘ABC’ smart card instead of cash starting Wednesday, which is expected to contribute to greater traffic flow for freight that has been conducted in the old way, even after the introduction of vignettes for passenger vehicles in the middle of the year.
"ABC" cards can be purchased at toll booths starting at midnight for a price of 53 euros, allowing for automatic lifting of the barrier on the lane reserved for trucks. The costs of introducing the card are estimated at 35,000 euros, and this system will be valid for the next ten months, until the introduction of a satellite toll collection system for freight vehicles, Slovenian media reported. Domestic carriers are not entirely satisfied with the toll price, which has increased from the previous 15 to 16.5 euro cents per kilometer with the introduction of the cards, stating that only the toll in Germany is more expensive, according to Slovenian media. The president of their professional association, Andrej Klobasa, stated that they have not made any progress with the government regarding benefits for domestic carriers in the past 16 years. (H)
