Microsoft Security Days 2008 Conference Opened in Zagreb

Probably the most significant gathering dedicated to computer security in Croatia began on Monday at the Antunović Hotel Congress Center, featuring the presentation of a new virtualization platform from Microsoft.

– We are all architects of security – emphasized Venesa Schütz, director of Microsoft Croatia, opening the sixth annual Microsoft conference on computer security. The new director of the Croatian branch of the world’s largest software corporation highlighted the lectures that will follow at the conference, especially one on the applications of the Information Security Act, and added that Microsoft is particularly proud of their virtualization platform, the operation of which will be demonstrated by Microsoft partners just a month after the global introduction of the platform that enables the creation of virtual servers as well as personal computers.

– I hope we will raise awareness about security, but the real work will begin when we all return to our work environments – concluded Venesa Schütz, opening the conference and wishing participants a pleasant stay. The floor was then taken by Vjeran Bušelić, the conference editor and Microsoft’s senior technology advisor. – When Venesa came to Microsoft Croatia, she asked what Microsoft means to you and what you are proud of in working there, and I now want to say in front of all 367 of you participants that I am proud to see the results of my beliefs – stated Bušelić, recalling the first conference. He said that back then they were not sure what they were doing, but today they are sure that this is exactly what the corporation is talking about.

– Back then we talked about how to secure systems so we wouldn’t get the Blaster worm. We were in reactive mode then, and in reactive base mode are all those who signed up but are not with us today because ‘something came up’ – said Bušelić, adding that security is a state of awareness and it is not debated – it is there. Then Dai Vu, director of marketing for Microsoft’s virtualization solutions, spoke about the new Microsoft virtualization platform. He presented the results of a study by the analytical firm IDC, conducted on 400 IT professionals in the U.S., according to which users do not virtualize old servers, but only new ones.

The increase in the number of physical servers is about 5% annually, but the number of logical servers will be approximately the same, 9.8 million as physical by 2011. Logical servers, thanks to virtualization, will be 5.5 for each physical host, and if this trend continues, the number of logical servers should exceed the number of physical servers in a few years. Already today, according to the results of the IDC survey, 44% of managers offer clients a virtual server first. (I. Škevin)
