Who has ‘masterfully’ failed?

After President of the Republic Stjepan Mesić, in his style, declared the ‘Index’ action to be masterful, information about the fate of the actors from the ‘Maestro’ affair has arrived. It seems to confirm Mesić’s doubts about the effectiveness of the actions.

The defendants from "Maestro", Juraj Parazajder and Asja Piplović, have been released from custody, where they had been since June of last year, so they will await the first hearing in freedom. Both of those released from custody are lawyers, and the decision to lift the custody was made by the Supreme Court when it accepted their appeals against the extension of custody. One of the arguments for the cessation of custody is precisely the long time spent in custody so far.

Even 15 months after the spectacular arrests, there are no indications that a hearing in the Maestro case could take place. Next week, the Supreme Court will also decide on the custody fate of Ivan Gotovac, one of the vice-presidents of the Croatian Privatization Fund, when his appeal will also be decided. The State Attorney’s Office (DORH) this weekend reminded on its internet pages of essential information about the cases from the "Maestro" action, which are under the jurisdiction of USKOK. DORH states that it did this due to statements from journalists and public figures that it is unknown when the actors from the Maestro affair will be charged.

DORH, among other things, reminds that after the investigation in the Maestro case, USKOK filed an indictment in February 2008 before the County Court in Zagreb against ten Croatian citizens J. M. (1949), R. P. (1965), I. G. (1973), I. P. (1957), A. P. (1956), M. J. (1960), J. P. (1950), S. S. (1966), D. M. (1965), and M. M. (1951) for committing criminal offenses of receiving bribes, aiding in receiving bribes, giving bribes, issuing and unauthorized obtaining of business secrets, associating for the commission of criminal offenses, abuse of position and authority, and aiding and inciting abuse of position and authority.
