Wireless Telecom Network in Varaždin Starting Today

Varaždin is now the first city in this part of Europe to operate a wireless telecommunications network that enables fast and easy access to information, as well as mutual data exchange between private users and among institutions.

"The Motorola MotoMesh Duo system allows for uninterrupted transmission of various types of data. It also enables a video surveillance system, which will be among the first to be used by the police and firefighters. In addition to them, various other public services such as emergency medical services, as well as cultural and educational institutions, may use this network in the future. The system is self-renewing and can be upgraded," said Ivan Jenkač, project manager of the "Smart City" initiative, under which the wireless telecommunications network was introduced.

"The system is primarily here for the citizens. I hope that our students, pupils, and professors will benefit the most from it. It is important to note that the system provides completely free internet access for citizens," emphasized Mayor Ivan Čehok.  The launch ceremony of the network was also attended by Stuart Broome Senior, Motorola’s director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, a partner in the project. Broome highlighted the excellent cooperation with Magic Telekom and the Varaždin city authorities, with whose help Varaždin became the first city to implement such a system. The system, valued at 910 thousand kuna, currently allows the use of the wireless network in the city center, and by the end of the year, it is expected to expand to the entire city core. Half of the amount of 910 thousand kuna was donated by Motorola. (H)
