For the first time in human history, the North Pole has become an island. As reported by the British newspaper Daily Mail, the latest satellite images taken three days ago show that the melting ice has opened the Northwest and Northeast passages for the first time, allowing the entire North Pole to be navigable.
This natural phenomenon benefits shipping companies, but scientists are extremely concerned as it highlights the severity of the global warming problem. Scientists warn that this could signify the beginning of the end for the North Pole. The Northeast Passage near Russia opened back in 2005, but the Northwest Passage near Canada remained closed. The latest satellite images show that for the first time in at least 125,000 years, that passage has also opened, making the North Pole an island. If the melting of the ice continues at this pace, worried scientists predict that by the already unfortunate year of 2013, the entire North Pole could be melted during the summer months. (HTV)
