The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Friday that the leak of plutonium from its laboratory earlier in August did not cause environmental contamination.
The agency stated that an independent analysis of soil, factory, and water samples showed that there was no radioactivity in the environment due to the incident that occurred on August 3. A small amount of plutonium leaked in the laboratory, but all contamination was contained within the steel-lined safe, the IAEA reported, adding that an investigation into the causes of the incident is ongoing. The laboratory is located 35 kilometers southeast of Vienna. (H)
