Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced on Monday the construction of several nuclear power plants. “With this strategic decision, we are taking on a new responsibility and responding to the energy opportunities in Egypt,” stated the Egyptian president.
Egypt will engage in nuclear energy solely for peaceful purposes, emphasized Mubarak. The first nuclear power plant will be built in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In addition to nuclear energy production, Egypt, according to President Mubarak, will increase the share of energy obtained from solar and wind sources to 20 percent of the total energy produced in the country by 2020.
