In the last few days, a couple of cases of ATM damage have been observed, which could aim at their misuse. Therefore, the Croatian Banking Association and its member banks once again warn all users to exercise increased caution and self-protection when using ATMs.
When using ATMs, one of the simplest and practically proven most effective methods of self-protection is to shield the entry of the PIN number on the ATM keypad (with a hand, wallet, etc.). The possibility of misuse without the secret PIN number is negligible. HUB also advises card users to keep their PIN confidential, to always keep the card separate from the PIN, and not to leave it unattended by third parties (for example, when paying bills in restaurants).
Misuse of this kind in Croatia is of a smaller scale compared to experiences in other countries around the world, including EU countries. However, if misuse does occur, it is important to emphasize that there is no actual damage to the client, except of course for the subjective feeling of having been a victim of fraud. If a client notices unauthorized transactions, they should immediately contact their bank. Regarding the ATM and card security system in Croatia, it follows global trends and technologies. Continuous efforts and significant resources are invested in improving the security system. Additionally, regular cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior is conducted to coordinate the protection systems for bank clients, ATMs, and other technologies, as stated in the HUB statement.
