South Korean Samsung Electronics has developed the most powerful memory chip to date, which will enable the creation of a memory card capable of storing 80 DVD movies, reported one of the world’s leading technology companies on Tuesday.
Furthermore, Samsung announced that it has developed the world’s first 64-gigabit NAND flash memory chip, which it describes as the greatest
advancement in the field of flash memory. Up to 16 of these chips can be combined to create a 128-gigabyte memory card that can store 80 DVD movies or 32,000 music tracks in MP3 format, Samsung stated, adding that production is planned to begin in 2009.
"This represents the largest storage capacity on a single memory card ever developed in the world," said Kwon Hyuosun, senior manager in the investor relations department at Samsung Electronics. Samsung announced that the latest product will create a new market worth $20 billion by 2011 by offering new applications for various multimedia devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and MP3 players. Unlike DRAM chips, conventional memory chips used for personal computers, flash memory can retain and store data even when the device is powered off. (H)
