Croatian President Stjepan Mesić expressed today in New York his support for the pre-election announcement of taxing large wealth in Croatia.
In response to a journalist’s question about his recent support for the economic programs of the SDP and HNS, Mesić specified that it was support for “parts of the program,” particularly highlighting his support for the announcement of “taxing large wealth.” “I am absolutely for that. No one is talking about taxing normal inheritances, acquired through regular business, but we have wealth that is beyond that, where people secured such wealth during wartime that will satisfy even their great-grandchildren,” said Mesić, who is leading the state delegation in New York at the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly. For such inheritances, there should be “another rate, which would also encompass, so to speak, fairness,” he added. He also expressed support for taxing “capital gains,” citing as an example the sale of Tifon and Lura, Luka Rajić, particularly the “enormous profit” that Lura had thanks to, among other things, state incentives for the development of dairy farming. President Mesić did not wish to comment on the departure of parliamentary representatives Tonči Tadić and Miroslav Rožić from the Croatian Party of Rights. (H)
