German police have arrested 10 individuals suspected of participating in an international chain of online fraud, causing damage to end users amounting to several hundred thousand euros, according to global agencies.
An eighteen-month investigation resulted in the arrest of ten Russians, Ukrainians, and Germans aged between 20 and 36 who were involved in phishing scams. The targets of this criminal group were eBay and Deutsche Telekom users.
The forged email messages contained a Trojan horse that records the data users enter. German police state that this case demonstrates that criminal organizations are increasingly using the Internet to carry out various forms of fraud, and that the police face new challenges daily in preventing cybercrime due to the constant growth in the sophistication of attackers’ methods.
The arrested individuals are from Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Frankfurt, and with the stolen money, they purchased expensive jewelry, cars, and went on luxury trips. (Mislav Nekić)
