MOL Ready to Negotiate Acquisition if Austria Sells Stake in OMV

Discussions with OMV would only make sense if Austria decides to sell its stake in the Austrian conglomerate, stated the CEO of the Hungarian oil and gas company Zsolt Hernadi in an interview with the Budapest daily Vilaggazdasag.

In that case, discussions would revolve around MOL’s acquisition of OMV since MOL is a more efficient company, Hernadi asserted, adding that MOL’s experiences in Croatia and Slovakia could contribute to improving OMV’s efficiency in Austria. In the event of a merger between the two companies, one should expect conditions from the European Commission, and it would likely be necessary to sell the Schwachat refinery since it does not operate economically like MOL’s refineries in Hungary (Szazholaombatta) and Slovakia (Bratislava).

As for cooperation with OMV, MOL is still ready to talk, emphasizes MOL’s leader, citing as an example the negotiations for cooperation in the natural gas sector that were interrupted after OMV increased its stake in MOL to 18.9 percent in June of this year. (Hina)
