Approximately three million containers and a total traffic of 30 million tons of cargo, which would generate around 1.8 billion dollars in revenue annually on the Rijeka transport route, is the perspective predicted by the master plan for the development of the Port of Rijeka by 2030, writes today’s Novi list.
If significant investments in the Rijeka transport route are realized with this traffic growth, GDP growth of at least two to four percent would be achieved, or even four to šix percent in a more optimistic scenario. This data is part of a previously unknown expert study prepared by the consulting firm Rotterdam Maritime Group, spanning more than a thousand pages. This is the most important strategic plan for the long-term development of Croatia’s largest port, which can be compared in significance for the Rijeka transport route to the general urban planning of the city or county. To achieve the mentioned ambitious goals, the implementation of a series of investment projects worth around two billion euros is a prerequisite, among which the most expensive will be the flat railway line Rijeka-Zagreb-Botovo, costing more than one billion euros. The plan envisions the greatest strategic change in that Rijeka will become a dominant container port in the next 20 years, while all other types of cargo will have almost marginal importance, far less than previously.
