The Italian energy company Enel will invest 3.2 billion euros in Slovakia by 2013, announced Enel’s CEO Fulvio Conti and Slovak Minister of Economy Lubomir Jahnatek.
The Italian company has committed to completing the construction of two blocks at the Mochovce nuclear power plant. The start of construction is planned for the second half of the year, with completion expected in 2012. Enel is also competing for the construction of a thermal power plant in Kosovo. In the race for this contract worth three billion euros are the Greek-American Sencap, German RWE Power AG, Czech-American consortium CEZ-AES, and the German-American consortium EnBW and WGI (Washington Group International).
The company also intends to participate in the electricity distribution network in Bulgaria and plans to double the production capacity of the Marica East 3 power plant, in which it already holds a 73 percent ownership stake. It is also considering investing 900 million euros in a project to increase the production capacity of the plant from 800 to 1,500 megawatts.
Plans are also in place for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Belene, Romania. Enel is ready to take a 49 percent stake in the new plant and purchase half of the produced electricity to resell it in Romania, Greece, and Turkey. The value of this project is estimated at four billion euros. (H)
