Lenovo, in collaboration with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 205,000 batteries consisting of nine cells and having an extended lifespan. For public safety, Lenovo will offer users a free replacement for all batteries being recalled from the market.
Lenovo has confirmed that laptops containing the disputed batteries may be exposed to overheating if the battery systems are subjected to strong external forces, thus posing a potential hazard to users. Lenovo advises its customers to check if they are using one of the battery models covered by this decision. The recalled batteries were sold separately or together with the following new models of Lenovo laptops: R60 and R60e series, T60 and T60p series, Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, and Z61p series.
These models of Lenovo laptops were delivered with standard batteries or with batteries consisting of nine cells and having an extended lifespan. Only a portion of the larger batteries consisting of nine cells and having an extended lifespan with the serial number FRU P/N 92P1131 is being recalled from the market. Users who possess batteries subject to this recall and intend to transport their ThinkPad laptops or use them in a manner that exposes them to strong external forces are advised to continue using their computers by turning off the laptop, removing the battery, and connecting the AC adapter to power. Users should only use original ThinkPad batteries obtained from Lenovo or authorized Lenovo distributors.
