Embrace Even Your Enemy for Survival

The new issue of Lider focuses on the phenomenon of strategic alliances. Being better than others today is literally a condition for survival in the business world. Achieving this independently is very difficult and almost impossible. Competition simply cannot do without cooperation, and no matter how hard it may be for some, only through a ‘pact’ can we move forward with sufficiently large and rapid steps.

The new issue of Lider indeed contains many interesting topics, and it is difficult to make a fair selection.
The story by Bojana Božanić titled ‘The Family Silver Sold Off, New Production Bypasses Croatia’ discusses the increase in foreign investments in our country, but also their concerning structure.  There is less and less material left for privatization, and previous investments have primarily been directed towards banks, savings banks, insurance companies, and telecommunications. The truth is that foreigners came to Croatia to buy the market, not to build production facilities.

Lidija Kiseljak spoke with Ljubo Jurčić, who presented a comprehensive electoral economic program. A different economic program, devoid of the usual phrases and with a shift in economic policy, is also the first party project. This is an important initial advantage, as other parties will have to refer to the SDP’s proposals. What the well-known SDP member proposes can be read in the text ‘Jurčić’s Radical Economic Changes Challenge Sanader’.

Although spring has not yet arrived, for tourism workers the season is ‘at the door’. After years of dynamic growth, last year Croatian tourism traffic recorded half the growth rate of Europe. Is this an alarming figure that should shake the thesis that Croatia is among the most desirable global destinations, and what threats lie ahead for the upcoming tourist season can be found in Željka Laslavić’s story ‘High Prices for Tourism More Dangerous than the Crisis in Kosovo and Disputes with Italy and Slovenia’.

To survive, collaboration is necessary. Lider’s journalists Matilda Bačelić and Sandra Babić investigated how far Croatia lags behind global market trends and, of course, what the reasons are for when to agree to strategic connections, even with the fiercest opponent.

After the sale of Pliva, many are waiting to see what will happen with the strongest domestic drug trader – Medikom. The management and shareholders of Medika are quite secretive, and the prices of its shares are skyrocketing. Antonija Knežević tried to find out why certain shareholders are trying to artificially raise the price of the largest wholesale pharmacy.

The business knowledge section brings an educational topic about how companies fight for the increasingly influential consumers. The ultimate goal of companies, experts claim, is not to win over consumers who blindly follow trends, but to win the hearts of clients who seek innovation. How to offer something interesting and make others want the same can be read in the story ‘Early Adopters: ‘Sniffing’ Trends and Spreading the Word about an Unknown Brand’.

This week’s feature is the ideal ‘company’ for an early morning office coffee. It is a story about Saudi Prince Al-Walid ibn Talal and Bill Gates, who together took over The Four Seasons Hotels Inc. Kingdom Holding Company, a huge multinational, intercontinental business conglomerate at the helm of which has earned Al-Walid the title of ‘Arabian Warren Buffett’. He is among the ten richest people in the world on Forbes’ list. (G. J.)
